Aaron Watson on #RLRMLive

October 30, 2020

The anticipation for our show with Aaron Watson was high, and the crowd was not disappointed! Watson’s biggest fans from around the Houston area gathered at the Dosey Doe listening barn to see him in a more stripped down, intimate atmosphere.

Aaron kicked off the show playing a few of his hit songs, stopping along the way to explain their meanings and tell a few of the stories that went along with writing them.

In 2015, Watson made music history when his album The Underdog debuted at #1 on the charts, making him the first male independent Country artist to have ever done so. To this day, Watson owns his own record label and stays true to his roots. He takes pride in writing all his own songs and running his career the way he sees fit.

Aaron told the story of getting to perform at the Stagecoach music festival in California, where each performer was supposed to be broadcast on the radio. Turns out during his performance, they decided to go a different direction… playing a rerun of a completely different artist. Though the music industry tries to strike him for doing things his own way, he’s persevered and seems to be very successful nevertheless!

Towards the end of the set, Watson played one of his newest songs, “American Soul,” released as an effort to soften the mood across the nation. “The American Soul needs a pep talk right now more than ever. We need to turn off the news, turn up the music and dance with the ones we love. This year has been filled with an overdose of hate and heartache and a shortage of hugs. I hope this new song fills your heart with hope during these troubled times,” Watson wrote upon its release.

Following his patriotic lead, host and singer songwriter Kyle Hutton played one of his most well known songs, “Skin in the Game,” a tune based off of a true story, honoring families with a loved one in the military. “Freedom is different with skin in the game…” It sure is.

When the night was all said and done, fans lined up to exchange a few words with Watson and grab some photos. As is our goal for every Real Life Real Music show, we think each and every fan walked away that night learning something new about Aaron Watson. Missed the show?
